UK motorists waste £1000 million on fuel, tyres, due to underinflation

Melksham, UK--Cooper-Avon Tyres claims that UK motorists waste over £1000 million each year because of under-inflated tyres. The US-owned company says extra fuel consumption costs UK motorists £790 million, while early replacement of tyres costs a further £230 million each year.

Researchers at Cooper-Avon estimate that 90 per cent of vehicles have at least one tyre running at 90 percent or less of the recommended pressure. The company then claims that this equates to a 15 per cent reduction in the life expectancy of the tyre or an extra £5 per year cost to the driver - or £230 million if extended to all UK drivers. The increased rolling resistance of under-inflated tyres decreases fuel efficiency by 2.5 percent, says the company, adding even more to the annual over-spend.
