Slinger, Wisconsin -- The American Latex Allergy Association (ALERT) has named next week as national latex allergy awareness week. The organisation has been "challenging latex-allergic individuals in each [US] state to join together and ask their Governor to issue a state proclamation" to that effect.
The focus of this year's campaign, says the ALERT, is the use of latex gloves in food preparation and food handling. The Association is concerned many food establishments and restaurants are unaware that latex allergens from the food workers' latex gloves can be transmitted to the food that is handled.
