PennDOT uses 750,000 scrap tyres in bridge project

Armstrong County, Pennsylvania -- Civil engineers working on the new, $3.7 million Tarrtown Road Bridge used more than 750,000 scrap tyres in the project, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

PennDOT, working with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and various contractors, cleaned up every local scrap tyre pile to provide rubber shreds to fill the embankments supporting the approaches to the bridge, an agency spokesman said. The bridge opened to limited traffic Sept. 9 and fully on Oct. 21.
