NR prices fail to break 1988 highs in Tokyo - yet
Tokyo -- Rubber futures prices reached a 17-year high in Tokyo on Monday, but stopped just short of the price of ¥228.2/kg set in 1988. Six month futures, set for delivery May 2006 hit ¥227.6 on the Tokyo commodities exchange (Tocom) and declined further on Tuesday, closing at ¥218.6.
Meanwhile in India, RSS4 spot prices rose to Rs 70/kg and RSS3 for May 2006 increased to Rs86/kg.
Prices in Hat Yai, Thailand were said to have broken through the 1988 prices, reaching levels last seen in 1984, as fighting in Thailand rubber plantations hampered production. Commentators said this is likely to push prices up even further.
