SMMT advice on 'green' motoring refers to tyres
London - The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) -the UK's automotive trade organisation - has published a guide to good driving titled, Drive green, drive safely.
The idea is to provide, "a handy reminder that there are simple things we can all do to make for cleaner, safer journeys." according to Stephen Ladyman, the UK's, transport minister.
The booklet says maintaining correct tyre pressure can improve fuel economy by up to 10 percent, and that pressures should be checked weekly for both pressure and condition. The guide suggests changing tyres, "well before theyreach the minimum legal tread depth." It does not specify the legal tread depth requirements.
In particular it recommends drivers change tyres close to the limit before the winter season, as part of seasonal preparation for difficult driving conditions.
The guide also notes that the spare tyre should be checked regularly for pressure and condition and replaced if it is not in good condition. The guide does not mention the issue of tyre ageing.
The SMMT has made the booklet available for download on its website (see below).
