Incorrect tyre pressure is biggest problem on US cars says AAA
Atlanta, Georgia - Tyre pressure was the number one issue affecting US vehicles, according to a survey of over 6500 vehicles studied across the United States in October. The survey was carried out by the US-based American Automobile Association (AAA).
The organisation did not give details on the extent of the tyre pressure problem among motorists, but the study is consistent with previous research showing that drivers do not pay attention to tyre pressure.
"Drivers should check tyre pressure at least once a month to ensure tyres are not under- or over-inflated," said Mike Lavoie, the 2006 NAPA Technician of the Year and owner of Lavoie's NAPA AutoCare Center in Haverhill, New Hampshire "Low pressure in the tyres can increase wear and fuel consumption, while having too much pressure may reduce traction. Keeping tyres properly aligned will also help assure longer tyre life and improve fuel economy."
other issues identified in the study were poor engine oil maintenance, clogged air filters, low windscreen washer fluid, poorly maintained engine coolant, poor wiper blade maintenance and shallow tyre treads.
