Malaysia's NR production up 10 percent in 12 months
Kuala Lumpur -Â Malaysia produced 127 917 tonnes of natural rubber (NR) in August 2006, an increase of 6,991 tonnes or 5.8 percent compared to July. Year-on-year, production rose by 10.7%. For the period January - August 2006, total production amounted to 852,681 tonnes. The smallholding sector contributed 94.4% of total production in August, while the estate sector, the remaining 5.6%.
During the first eight months of 2006, exports of natural rubber amounted to 761 500 tonnes. The main importers were China (275,854 tonnes), Federal Republic of Germany (92,583 tonnes), Republic of Korea (45,972 tonnes), US. (43,314 tonnes), Iran (27,128 tonnes) and France (26,105 tonnes).
The major NR consuming industries for the period January - August 2006 were rubber gloves 59.8%, rubber thread 15.6% and tyre & tubes 12.0%. The consumption by these three industries constituted 87.4% of the total domestic consumption of NR.
The average monthly price of bulk latex in August 2006 decreased by 19.0% to 507.77 sen as compared to July 2006. Year-on-year, the price of latex increased by 28.1%. In August 2006, the price of SMR 20 decreased by 6.7% to 782.52 sen compared to July 2006. Year-on-year, the increase was 46.9%.
