Goodyear to pay $925,000 to settle US sex discrimination charge
Danville, Virginia -- An administrative law judge has approved a settlement agreement between Goodyear and the US Department of Labor on allegations the tyre maker refused to hire some 800 women who applied for entry-level jobs at Goodyear´s tyre factory in Danville, Virginia, in the US.
While still denying the charge, Goodyear has agreed to pay $925,000 (€714 000) to the women, and to hire up to 60 who are still interested in working at the plant.
The Labor Department´s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs filed the charge last June, alleging that Goodyear failed to comply with US government directives forbidding sex discrimination.
The women represented in the government lawsuit applied for work at Danville between January 1998 and June 1999.
