Michelin to close Ohio plant, consolidate production at Alabama facility
Mogadore, Ohio - Michelin North America Inc. plans to consolidate tyre production from its facility in Mogadore, Ohio to its BFGoodrich tyre manufacturing factory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the company announced April 12.
The Mogadore facility employs approximately 70 hourly and salaried workers and produces short runs of specialty tyres, such as rock crawling and competition tyres. The transfer of production will begin in July and be completed by the end of October, when the Mogadore facility will end production operations.
All affected employees will be eligible for a severance package, including outplacement assistance, the company said.
Michelin is consolidating production at Tuscaloosa to leverage the existing supply relationship and synergies with the Mogadore facility, the company said. The Tuscaloosa facility employs approximately 1275 people and produces BFGoodrich-brand passenger car and light truck tyres.
This decision to close the Mogadore facility supports Michelin's emphasis on reducing production costs while continuing to provide its customers with quality products, said Jean-Michel Guillon, chief operating officer of Michelin Americas Small Tires. "The consolidation to the Tuscaloosa plant will take advantage of the economies of scale for the long term," he said.
