Goodyear looks at tyre research lab in Virginia
Akron, Ohio - Goodyear and a research organisation affiliated with Virginia Tech are exploring the option of building a tyre performance lab in Danville, Virginia.
The lab would facilitate high-speed testing for studying tyre performance, tyre/suspension dynamics and tyre-road interaction.
"Vehicle performance depends upon the forces generated at the tyre-road interface and conducting these high-speed tests in a precise, laboratory environment is a quantifiable leap in the science of tyre and vehicle performance," said William Hopkins, Goodyear vice president of technology and strategic initiatives.
The project would require collaboration between Goodyear, the research group Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, and city, county, state and federal government agencies. The IALR is an educational and research facility founded by Virginia to assist in economic revitalisation.
Goodyear has a tyre plant in Danville that opened in 1966.
The lab would be available to third-party, non-tyre researchers, Goodyear said.
