Apollo to use waste steam at Vadodara plant
New Delhi, India - Apollo Tyres Ltd has signed a deal to buy waste steam from the GAIL power generation company. The steam will be used to help cure tyres in the factory, which is close to the power station.
Presently, Apollo Tyres' Vadodara plant uses approximately 74 000 m3 of natural gas each day, as fuel for their plant requirements. Once the project is implemented, the consumption of gas will reduce to 40 per cent.
The project, based on waste heat recovery system from GAIL's Gas Turbines exhaust, is conceived as a clean development mechanism (CDM) project under Kyoto Protocol. The project would enable Apollo Tyres generate 4 MW of Power and enable the two companies save around 935 million kCalories of energy in producing process steam, thereby also avoiding formation of 55 000 tonnes of CO2 each year.
The project wil cost around Rs 350 million (€6.4 million), and will start delivering steam within 24 months. The contract lasts 15 years from July 2009.
