ContiTech to make AVS mounts in Mexico

San Luis Potosi, Mexico -- ContiTech Vibration Control has opened a new production site in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. In February 2009 it will start making engine mounts for automotive original equipment needs there.

“To be constructed in its entirety in several stages, the new plant will have a workforce of about 150 by 2012 and turn out up to a million engine mount systems a year,” said Kai Uwe Frühauf, managing director of ContiTech Vibration Control. Through 2011 ContiTech will be investing approx. EUR 8 million in production facilities, infrastructure and information technology. This is in addition to approx. EUR 5.4 million in tool investments to be partially borne by customers. The new plant is located eight kilometers from the ContiTech Mexicana headquarters.

The parts manufactured at the factory will be predominantly supplied to General Motors (GM) NAFTA-zone plants in Mexico and the US. Upon completion, the plant will be able to equip up to 560,000 vehicles with engine mounts each year. In the first phase, conventional hydro bushings and hydromounts are to be produced in an approx. 3,800 m² area. In 2009 another 3,400 m² will be added for manufacture of plastic mounts by means of a new process. As needed, the total production area will grow to 10,200 m² by 2012.

ContiTech has been producing in Mexico already since 1997. In the meantime five company business units have established themselves in the Latin American country, where they manufacture hose lines, conveyor belts, air springs, drive belts and more. In September of this year ContiTech is slated to open still another plant, likewise in San Luis Potosí, in which the Benecke-Kaliko Group will be making unsupported expanded vinyl and artificial leather for the vehicle interiors.
