Nokian to cut heavy tyre ouput at Finnish factory
ERJ staff report (TB)
Nokia, Finland -- Nokian Tyres PLC will trim production of heavy-duty tires at its Nokia headquarters plant through mid-2009 by laying off about 280 employees for periods of 10 to 100 days throughout the coming six months.
By staggering the layoffs according to job, Nokian said, the cutback will equate to 90 employees being off for the entire six months.
Nokian cited the global financial crisis for lower demand for heavy tyres.
Production personnel in the heavy tyres department staged a one-day walkout on 18th Dec. in protest against the move.
The heavy tyres department makes forestry, harbour, mining, agricultural and industrial machinery tyres in the face of low demand for forestry tyres.
