Lanxess to transfer rubber chemicals operations in India
ERJ staff report (DS)
Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India -- Lanxess India has moved a step closer to building a large chemicals complex in Gujarat, where it will consolidate manufacture of many chemicals. The company intends to close its existing rubber chemicals plant in Thane, Maharashtra state and move production to the new plant at Jhagadia, Gujarat by 2010.
Lanxess has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Gujarat state government. The agreement involves an investment of EUR 50 million in the new site, which will create about 225 new jobs. The MOU is part of the approval process for the new site, which was originally announced at the start of 2008.
Lanxess' production activities in Thane will be phased out gradually and will restart in Jhagadia along with a new ion exchange resin plant in 2010. The rubber chemicals plant will supply the rapidly growing Indian and export tyre market and makes Lanxess the only western company to have such operations in India.
