Gates Canada to close Ontario plant in late 2009
ERJ staff report (R&PN)
Denver, Colorado -- Gates Canada Inc. will close its London, Ontario, power transmission facility because of declining economic conditions globally.
The company plans to move a portion of its operations to its Windsor, Ontario, facility by the end of the second quarter of 2009, it said.
Closure of the facility is expected by December to allow for completion of production to meet customer requirements, the company said. The firm said it is taking the action because of falling sales volumes, continued pricing pressures and high raw material costs.
About 179 are employed at the London facility, which has been in operation since its move from Strathroy, Ontario, in 1999. Gates did not say how many would be laid off.
Gates Canada is a subsidiary of Gates Corp.
