Lanxess cuts butyl output as demand drops
ERJ staff report (DS)
Leverkusen Germany -- Lanxess has announced plans to reduce output of butyl rubber from its existing plants in Canada and Belgium. The announcement follows by less than a month Lanxess' decision to delay by nine months construction of a large butyl rubber plant in Singapore.
Lanxess said it intends to put 360 workers on short-time working and operate the two existing plants at reduced capacity. Lanxess said one of the plants may even shut down for several weeks. “These measures underline our commitment to reduce costs and control inventory levels,†said Ron Commander, Head of the Butyl Rubber business unit.
Lanxess' butyl rubber business is part of its performance polymers segment which recorded sales of EUR 2539 million in the first nine months of 2008.
