European replacement tyre sales fall 8% in 2008

Brussels -- Sales of replacement car tyres fell 8 percent in Europe in 2008, while sales of replacement truck tyres fell by 16 percent. The data comes in a new report from the ETRMA (European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers; Association). ETRMA said sales figures for December showed that the trend is worsening, with truck tyre sales down by 32 percent compared to Dec. 2007.
Total 2008 tyre sales reached 194.4 million units compared to 211.9 million in 2007.
In the truck sector total European ETRMA sales hit a new low of 9.536 million, down from 11.415 million in 2007 and 12.83 million in 2003.Â
In car tyres, ETRMA sales also fell to 182,8 million in 2008, from 198.3 million in 2007 and 209.3 million in 2003.
The agricultural sector also showed a continuing steady decline, with 2008 sales of 2.15 million , down from 2.19 million in 2007 and 2.94 million in 2003.
