Performance Fibers confirms job losses at US HMLS plant
ERJ staff report (DS)
Richmond, Virginia -- Performance Fibers has confirmed the stories coming out of the United States that it is to cut 20 percent of the workforce -- around 100 jobs -- at its Salisbury plant in North Carolina United States.
Corporate spokesman Jay Pomeroy told ERJ that the company has experienced similar layoffs in some of its other locations, but did not specify the numbers. The company said the reduction is part of a 'right-size' programme, to better match capacity with demand.
The Salisbury plant produces HMLS tyre yarn and HDI yarn, polymer chip and multiplex. Commissioned in the late 1960s, the plant has approximately 500 employees. Salisbury received ISO 9001 certification in 1993 and features a product application lab. Salisbury earned a North Carolina STAR (OSHA Voluntary Protection Program) award.
