Pirelli to introduce continuous mixing, new generation MIRS
ERJ staff report (DS)
Milan -- Pirelli has said it plans to introduce continuous mixing. Maurizio Boiocchi, R&D director at Pirelli Tyre has said the company will use a new generation of MIRS and continuous mixing will be used at the new development plant at Polo Settimo in Turin.
Boiocchi said, "this is an important development for Pirelli and will be implemented in the near future." Pirelli said the contimuous mixing is known as TCM and offers a low-energy solution to mixing
In another development, Boiocchi said Pirelli has developed a new type of silica based on rice husk ash. He said very soon this material would be in use in Pirelli products. Furthermore, Pirelli aims to increase its percentage of tyres made with low-rolling resistance compounds to 40 percent of total production by 2011, from 20 percent in 2008.
Francesco Gori, head of the Pirelli Tyre said the company has the highest percentage of turnover spend on R&D. He presented data showing Pirelli spends 3.5 percent of sales on R&D, compared with lower numbers at all the main competitors (see table).
