PPG claims its Agilon silicas eliminate silanisation and outgassing
ERJ staff report (DS)
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania -- PPG Industries' silicas business has introduced a new range of performance silicas under the Agilon name. PPG said the development, "significantly increases product performance and customer productivity." The Agilon 400 grade is aimed at tyre makers. The product is said to eliminate the silanisation reaction within a mixer.
“In the traditional production process, silica is blended with silane at the customer site in a mixer that is not designed to perform the chemical reaction required between the two materials,†said Tim Okel, PPG senior research associate for silica products. “With Agilon 400 silica, our customers can eliminate the silica and silane mixing step, which moved upstream into PPG's manufacturing process. This enables them to run their mixers faster and more efficiently leading to productivity improvements, while reducing the regulatory issues associated with the related alcohol emissions."
PPG said, "Agilon 400 supports the industry's need for safer, more environmentally responsible products. When used in tyre treads, Agilon 400 silica reduces rolling resistance and improves tyre handling and traction. These improvements support the tyre industry's need to increase vehicle fuel efficiency and safety and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The company added, "In addition to enhancing tyre performance, the new technology helps tyre manufacturers to increase production efficiency and reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions for a more environmentally-responsible manufacturing process."
