Top brands win ADAC, ÖAMTC summer tyre test
ERJ staff report (DS)
Munich, Germany -- Top brands came out best in the Swiss, German and Austrian motoring associations' annual summer tyre tests. Carried out by ADAC and its Austrian and Swiss counterparts - Österreichischer Automobil Motorrad und Touring Club (ÖAMTC) and Touring Club Suisse (TCS) - the comparative test involved eighteen different 185/60 R 14 H tyres and nineteen 205/55 R 16 W tyres.
Performance was measured in five major areas: dry grip, wet grip, fuel consumption, longevity and comfort (including noise).
Michelin, Conti, Fulda, Bridgestone Kumho, Uniroyal, Semperit, Nokian and Firestone all saw their tyres in the top category -- especially recommended. Maloya, Kenda, Wanli, Mabor and Syron were rejected with the lowest, "not recommended' category.
In the smaller tyres, Fulda's Carat Progresso came top, closely followed by Michelin's Energy Saver, Conti's PremiumContact 2; Bridgestone's Turanza ER300; Kumho's Solus KH17; Uniroyal's Rain expert and Semperit's Comfort Life products.
The Maloya Futura Primato; Kenda Komet SPT-1 and Wanli S1032 were specifically not recommended based on their performance in wet and dry braking tests.
Among the larger tyres, Michelin Primacy HP; Continental PremiumContact; Nokian Z G2; Bridgestone Turanza ER30; Firestone TZ 300 and the Goodyear OptiGrip (in V speed rating) all received top honours, while the Mabor Sport-Jet 2 and Syron Race 1 were not recommended.
