European Parliament adopts new tyre legislation
ERJ staff report (DS)
The European Parliament in Strasbourg has adopted new legislation on tyre regulations related to noise, wet grip and rolling resistance.
The bill will be fast-tracked through to the Council of Ministers where it will be adopted before the summer. The new regulation applies from 1 November 2011, a year earlier than the Commission proposed.  But various transition periods are provided for, in some cases until 2018, to enable the car industry to adapt to the new requirements. The compromise text as submitted to Parliament was adopted with no change. One amendment was proposed during the Parliamentary session, but it was not adopted.
