ETRMA welcome new European tyre safety laws

Brussels - The European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers' Association (ETRMA) has welcomed new tyre safety legislation approved by the European Parliament on Tuesday.

The new legislation, passed in Parliament on the 10 March will impose tighter limits on noise, wet grip and rolling resistance on most new tyres sold in Europe from 1 Nov 2012 onwards.

“The implementation of this legislation will be challenging, but the tyre industry is ready to meet the challenge in light of the consumers and citizens interests”, said ETRMA president Francesco Gori.

ETRMA said that this regulation is about environmental and safety objectives with challenging targets, while improving visibility and regulatory certainty for the next 10 years.

“It is about a single regulation, directly applicable in all the Member States, creating a level playing field in the EU,” the company said. “The challenge will be for the 27 enforcement Authorities to ensure consistent and effective market surveillance,” ETRMA added.

For the first time, by setting lower resistance requirements for truck tyres, the EU is anticipating CO2 provisions beyond the current European automotive policy targets and demonstrating the tyre industry's commitment to lowering CO2 emissions.

Ms Fazilet Cinaralp, ETRMA secretary general, said the massive Parliament approval provides regulatory visibility and legal certainty to be able to plan necessary investments whilst developing products with increasing safety performances and reducing environmental impact.
