Lanxess presents synthetic rubber innovations
ERJ staff report (RD)
Singapore - Lanxess AG will present a keynote speech on innovations in synthetic rubber at the World Rubber Summit on 23 March in Singapore, the company announced in a statement.
The summit, organised by the International Rubber Study Group (IRSG), will include the company's keynote speech - “Innovative Specialty Performance Rubber for Global Challenges in the Future†- presented by head of Lanxess Business Unit Technical Rubber Products, Dr. Guenther Weymans.
Lanxess estimates that more than 3 million tons of synthetic rubber was used in 2007, compared with 9.7 million tons of natural rubber. Innovations in synthetic rubber have led to its use in a wide range of applications including mobility, construction, healthcare, oil drilling and environmental stability, Lanxess added.
“In future, synthetic rubber will become even more important than it is now, Weymans says at the summit. “The reason is that the world is facing an energy crisis. Fossil fuels are becoming increasingly difficult to exploit. Global warming is shouting out for alternative energy sources. Wind power, solar energy and new methods for tapping conventional energy sources are opening up fresh opportunities for synthetic rubber and its users, well beyond the traditional fields of application for rubber.â€
The company is continuing to develop high-tech rubbers and expand its rubber network. Recently, Lanxess established a new research centre in the Chinese city of Qingdao and initiated a collaboration with Chinese research institues in Beijing and Shanghai.
