Toyo Tire earns award for technical development
ERJ staff report (TB)
Osaka, Japan - Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. Ltd. has earned the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan Inc.'s award for technical development.
Toyo, in cooperation with Honda R&D Co. Ltd., won the award for developing a technology used to increase tyre fuel efficiency as well as improve braking power.
Materials used on tyres to minimize energy loss help to improve fuel efficiency, the Japan-based tyre maker said, but they also hinder braking performance. Toyo developed a tyre using materials that increase energy loss only on the outside of the tread, helping to improve fuel economy by 1.5 percent while increasing stopping power.
The technology has been applied to the Toyo Tranpath A20 tyre, which is standard equipment on the Honda Crossroad crossover vehicle available in Japan since 2007.
