Conti-Machinery to close Puchov unit
ERJ staff report (DS)
Hannover, Germany -- Continental is to close its machinery operations in Slovakia, and concentrate all activities at the Hannover headquarters.
The company issued a press release and a spokeswoman confirmed that CM is to close the former Matador Machinery operations at Puchov in Slovakia, affecting about 190 people. She said CM is now concentrating on a one-site strategy, and has reversed its former strategic plan to develop the Puchov site. She added that the move is a cost-saving measure taken in response to a 50 percent reduction in machinery sales.
'When you have tried short-time working and all the other options, then you have to take very difficult decisions," she said.
As recently as February this year, Continental was intending to develop its operations at Puchov, moving as much manufacturing to the low-cost site as possible. Conti was unwilling to make further comment as this story was published.
