ERJ staff report (TB)
Santo Andre, Brazil -- Pirelli Tyre SpA has agreed to buy natural rubber produced in Brazil using eco-sustainable efforts in line with its “Green Performance†targets outlined in the firm's 2009-11 industrial plan.
Pirelli disclosed its commitment to support the sustainable NR effort July 3 during presentations at its Santo Andre manufacturing and research complex marking the firm's 80th anniversary of business in Brazil.
Pirelli did not disclose the value or scale of its commitment, but executives said the plan will help preserve the Xapuri region's environment and aid the economic development of the region's native population.
Pirelli also said it supports the national Brazilian program for recycling used tyres, although it did specify its types of support.
Pirelli generated more than $1.2 billion in sales last year in Brazil, where it employs 9,600. The Italian company is targeting 10-percent growth in Brazil through 2011.
