DuPont's Kevlar technology used in Goodyear concept tyre
ERJ staff report (RD)
Wilmington, Delaware - Scientists from DuPont have been applying high-strength Kevlar products to Goodyear tyres to increase performance in a range of conditions, DuPont said 14 July.
Among the latest innovations, Goodyear subsidiary Dunlop, working with designer Pininfarina, unveiled a future “ultra-lightweight concept tyre†that uses Kevlar to replace traditional steel components, achieving 20 percent less weight to improve fuel economy and performance, the statement said. “Such an enormous weight reduction would lead to significantly lower levels of rolling resistance and fuel consumption,†said Dunlop director consumer tyre technology, Bernd Loewenhaupt.
Kevlar technology has been used as reinforcement in tyres for a number of years, increasing sidewall puncture resistance, thermal and flame resistance and reducing tyre weight and noise. Other innovations incorporating Kevlar include the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R off-road tyre and the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx TT road tyre, the statement added.
