Ontario launches tyre recycling programme
ERJ staff report (DS)
Toronto, Ontario -- Ontario has rolled out its scrap tyre programme. The programme is free toconsumers, yet promises to eliminate tyre stockpiles within three years thanks to a cash injection of C$ 23 million in thefirst year
The funds will come from tyre producers -- manufacturers and importers -- rather than tax payers
It aims to deal with 11 million tyres annually and also to remove 2.8 million tyres from stockpiles and tyre dumps across Ontario within three years. Prior to the development of this programme, around half Ontario's tyres were trucked into the US to be burned.
