Ontario group budgets $20 million for tyre recycling program
ERJ staff report (R&PN)
Toronto, Canada -- Ontario is rolling out its first scrap tyre recycling program in 16 years, managed by Ontario Tire Stewardship, a coalition of industry stakeholders.
“Ontario's Used Tires Program marks the most ambitious used tyre program in the country,†said Andrew Horsman, executive director of Ontario Tire Stewardship.
The main goals of the Used Tires Program are to eliminate the estimated 2.8 million scrap tyres stockpiled in Ontario; end any unauthorized disposal of the estimated 11 million scrap yires generated each year in the province; promote the reuse and recycling of tyres into green products; spend more than $23 million Canadian ($20.8 million U.S.) the first year alone to create jobs and promote growth in the Ontario scrap tyre recycling industry; and fund research and development in new processes and markets for recycled rubber products within the province.
