New technology improves waste tyre conversion
ERJ staff report (RD)
Mount Laurel, New Jersey - Global Resource Corp., a developer of patent-pending microwave technology and machinery for scrap-tyre conversion, has claimed that independent test results indicate its technology could produce a carbon product with “significantly higher value per tonne than any other derived end product from the waste tyre industry - and at a competitive level of competitive investment.â€
The tests, conducted by Akron Rubber Development Laboratory Inc, verified the bench-top production of consistent, high-grade carbon black material from scrap tyres using Global's microwave technology. Additional testing will now be undertaken using its development prototype, the company said in a 7 Sep announcement.
Global said worldwide carbon black production is about 18 billion lbs per year, or 8.1 million tonnes, 90 percent of which is used in rubber applications and 10 percent in speciality products, according to the International Carbon Black Association. The company says that up to 400 lbs of high-value carbon black product(s) could be produced from each tonne of waste tyres when its technology is commercially scaled.
“By providing operators with a consistent, high-grade carbon black end product, we enhance the economic results of current technologies used to deal with waste tyres,†said Global Resource ceo Peter Worthington. “These tests, when repeated and verified in a commercial-scale prototype, are 'game-changing' and hold the potential to radically transform waste tyre processing by providing a more valuable net revenue stream for waste tire recyclers and processors,†he added.
