Federal to phase out use of high-aromatic oils

Taipei, Taiwan - Federal Corp. said it plans to eliminate the use of high-aromatic oils in the manufacturing of its tyres.
High-aromatic oils are regarded as hazardous substances that can be harmful to both humans and the environment, Taiwan-based Federal said. The tyre maker plans to replace these toxic oils with clean alternatives at its plants in Chungli, Taiwan, and Jiangxi, China.
Federal said the implementation of this environmental initiative is in compliance with the European Union's REACH (registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals) directive.
The EU has brought in legislation banning HA oils from tyres manufactured after 31 December 2009 from sale in the EU. This legislation is separate and distinct from REACH legislation.Â
As part of its effort, the company released a new icon on its tyre labels that says, “HA (high-aromatic) Oil Free.â€
