Further decreases in Malaysian NR production

Kuala Lumpur -- Production of natural rubber (NR) amounted to 74,769 tonnes in August 2009. This was a decrease of 27.8% (28,966 tonnes) compared wit the same month a year ago. It also repreented a decline of 9.9% (8,225 tonnes) when compared to the previous month. The smallholding sector contributed 93.5% of total production while the remaining 6.5% came from the estate sector.
Exports of Malaysian NR in August 2009 fell lby 17.2% (14,240 tonne) compared to the same month in 2008. However, exports in August were up by 11.1% compared with July 2009. Standard Malaysian Rubber (S.M.R.) constituted 95.1% (65,135 tonnes)of total exports. Of the total S.M.R. exported, S.M.R. 20 accounted for the highest at 44.8%.
Imports of NR amounted to 59,680 tonnes in August 2009, up by 21.2% on the same month a year ago, but down by 13.3 % when compared to July 2009. The main type of rubber imported was latex concentrate which accounted for 46.4% of total imports during the reference month.
Domestic consumption of NR in August 2009 was 41,024 tonnes, up by just 1.3% on the same month a year ago and up by 1.8% (771 tonnes) when compared to July 2009.
