Scrap tyre used to make self-illuminating pavement
ERJ staff report (DS)
London -- A UK-based design company has developed a self-illuminating paving slab made from scrap tyres. The company, called Pavegen sets a small lighting unit and generator inside a rubber tile, This is then set into the floor and can be set up to illuminate an advertising point.
The tiles flex as people step on them and the motion generates enough electricity to power the light. The system can be used to illuminate signs or advertising, even when there is no mains electricity nearby.
Laurence Kemball-Cook, director of Pavegen said his company has run limited trials already ands will commence a year-long trial in the new Year, siting the tiles in areas of heavy footfall, such as airports or shopping malls.
