ETRMA announces latest tyre recycling figures
ERJ staff report (DS)
Brussels -- In 2008, more than 95% of end of life tyres entered the recycling and recovery routes, according to official figures from the ETRMA. In 2008, up to 60% of end of life tyres arisings on the European market were collected and treated under Producer Responsibility obligations.
The percentage of tyres sent to landfill has decreased steadily since 1994 when landfill accounted for 60 percent of all disposal routes, to just 5 percent in 2008. The progress has been almost linear, suggesting that by 2010 landfill will have been abandoned as a means of disposal.
Meanwhile both energy recovery and material recycling have both grown almost linearly over the same period, from virtually zero to well over 30 percent of the total for each route.
