Goodyear sends Bio-Isoprene tyres to Copenhagen
ERJ staff report (DS)
Copenhagen -- Goodyear is aiming to win a Green scoop by presenting concept tyres made using a new form of isoprene in Copenhagen, the venue for the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (COP 15).
The company has sent two tyres to Copenhagen. one will remain on display in the departure lounge at Copenhagen airport; the other will make appearances at several special events at COP15 throughout December.
The tyres made with BioIsoprene are the result of a collaboration between Genencor, a division of Danisco, and Goodyear, one of the world's largest and most innovative tire companies.
Bio-Isoprene is normal C5 monomer, but made using genetically-modified organisms. This route offers a much lower cost route to te manufacture of synthetic isoprene than the traditional high-energy route, which uses crude oil.
Goodyear uses a molecule called styrene-isoprene butadiene rubber insome of its tyres. The company has not said it intends to make synthetic polyisoprene from the raw material.
