Yokohama holds tree-planting ceremony

Tokyo -- Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. staged a second-phase tree-planting ceremony Dec. 5 at its Yokohama Tire Philippines Inc. factory as part of the company's “Yokohama Forever Forest” project.

The ceremony drew more than 900 attendees, including Yokohama employees and their families, along with neighboring companies and media representatives. Participants planted 4,294 seedlings of 20 species of indigenous trees, according to the company.

The Tokyo-based tyre maker initiated the project in 2007 as a means to help create forests at seven of its domestic production sites and 11 overseas group companies leading up to its 100th anniversary in 2017. In all, Yokohama said it expects to plant about 500,000 trees.

First-phase tree plantings have been carried out at all seven of Yokohama's Japan locations, while second-phase plantings have been completed at all but its Shinshiro factory. Overseas first-phase plantings have been held at five plants, and second-phase plants have taken place at three.

Yokohama said more than 130,000 trees have already been planted through the program.
