Turkish tyre sector reaches labour agreement
ERJ staff report (RD)
Izmit/Adapazari, Turkey -- The Turkish tyre sector recently avoided strike action, reaching a collective labour agreement that “preserves gained rights and improvements to salaries and social benefits,†a recent news report from the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM) said.
The sector-wide agreement covers over 4000 members of the Lastik-Is union in four tyre plants, namely Bridgestone Brisa, Goodyear, and Pirelli in the Turkish cities of Izmit and Adapazari, the report said.
Previously, employers had been in dispute with the union over concessions on working conditions and wage grades, with possible strike action scheduled in June, before the agreement was reached.
“During tough and tensioned negotiations, our members showed a great deal of decisiveness in securing their gained rights, thus the agreement has resulted in preserving past achievements,†said Abdullah Karacan, president of Lastik-Is.
