Eclipse launches, 'World's lightest bicycle inner tube'
ERJ staff report (DS)
Ebmatingen, Switzerland -- Eclipse Microsystems GmbH has launched a bicycle tyre inner tube, credited as the world's lightest. The company claims it is made from 'a special plastic'. It does not refer to the Yokohama/Exxon material being promoted as a lightweight plastic which is better then butyl rubber in its air retention properties.
Eclipse said the tube has been under development for seven years and can be repaired with a repair patch. Depending on size, the tube weighs around 50g, compared with over 100g for a premium lightweight tube from competing manufacturers.
The cost, however, is euro 65 each. not a price many cyclists will be keen to spend to save 50g or so.
