Nynas to add hydrogen capacity in Sweden
ERJ staff report (DS)
Nynäshamn, Sweden - Nynas has opened a specialised hydrogen plant in in Nynäshamn, Sweden. Hydrogen is used in the manufacture of so-called 'clean' oils (unlabelled oils) used in the tyre industry, to improve the chemical composition of the oils and to remove impurities.
"It is the increased demand we are experiencing that is driving this investment. We are at the cutting edge of development in terms of environmentally sound and less harmful oils, and we are working continuously on developing our products to maintain our strong position in the global market," says CEO Staffan Lennström.
Nynas said the investment of SEK 800 million (Euro 80 million) safeguards the refinery's supply of hydrogen and lays the foundations for future expansion. Next year Nynas will be switching its raw material for the production of hydrogen to natural gas. This will reduce the company's carbon dioxide emissions by 20,000 tonnes per year. The plant was inaugurated today at noon by County Governor Per Unckel.
