UK company director fined for tyre dumping
ERJ staff report (DS)
Nottingham, UK -- On 27 August 2010, Edward O'Neill, of Blacksmiths Close, Nether Broughton, Melton Mowbray pleaded guilty to three charges relating to the illegal dumping, keeping and shredding of tyres. The 57 old was estimated to have benefited by over £325,000 as a result of his illegal activities. He was sentenced to a two year conditional discharge and ordered to pay costs of £1,500.
Counsel for Prosecution, Romilly Edge, told the court that the defendant was the director of Robin Hood Environmental Ltd, a company that owned and operated a waste disposal site at Oakfield Lane, Warsop. The site was located next to a vacant plot of land owned by Nottinghamshire County Council. The land owned by the Council did not have a waste management licence but the defendant took possession of this land and used it as a waste disposal site by depositing, keeping and treating waste tyres on site, in contravention of section 33 Environmental Protection Act 1990.
On 29 May 2009 the site occupied by Robin Hood Environmental Ltd caught fire, requiring Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Services to be on site until 3 June.
