International seminar on Phytophthora Disease planned for September
ERJ staff report (DS)
Kottayam, Kerala, India -- The Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) is organising an international workshop on Phytophthora diseases of plantation crops and their management and exhibition of plant protection chemicals and machinery at Kottayam from 12 to 17 September 2011.
Phytophthora diseases, caused by one of the most destructive plant pathogens, are common in plantation crops like rubber, cocoa, coconut and pepper. Phytophthora causes severe leaf fall, shoot rot and growth retardation in rubber holdings. More than 30 per cent of crop loss has been reported from many affected holdings. In India, attack of phytophthora disease in rubber was first reported from Palappilly estate in Trichur district in 1910.
RRII is organising this workshop and exhibition to mark the centenary year of the first report of Phytophthora leaf disease in rubber plantation in India and the Golden Jubilee year of the recommendation of the spraying of oil based copper fungicide against abnormal leaf fall disease in rubber plantations.
Potential speakers should email their abstracts before 30 June 2011. Full text of the accepted papers should be submitted before 15 August 2011. Exhibitors should reserve their stalls in advance.
