Wacker invests in Indian silicone rubber compounding plant
ERJ staff report (LMH)
Munich, Germany - Munich-based chemical company Wacker has commissioned a compounding plant at its joint venture site near Calcutta for the manufacture of ready-to-use silicone elastomers.
The plant at the Wacker Metroark Chemicals Pvt Ltd site is designed to have a production capacity of several thousand tonnes, Wacker said in a 29 June statement. Capacity will be expanded as demand requires, the company added. Wacker intends to invest several million euros in the plant but did not specify an exact figure.
“India is one of our fastest-growing sales markets,†commented Dr. Bernd Pachaly, head of Wacker's Engineering Silicones. He added, “The new SILMIX facility will produce silicone compounds for the Indian electronics, automotive and medium and high-voltage insulator market as well as for other industries.â€
Wacker noted that by manufacturing the products locally, the company could serve the market with more flexibility and significantly reduce lead times.
The German company's joint venture Wacker Metroark Chemicals is headquartered in Calcutta, and is responsible for the manufacturing and marketing of Wacker silicone products in the Indian subcontinent.
