Solvay picks contractor for epichlorhydrin project in China
ERJ staff report (DS)
Taixing, Jiangsu Province, China -- Solvay has awarded an engineering contract to Technip for studying the construction of a greenfield plant plant based on Solvay's patented Epicerol technology to produce 100 kilo-tons per year of epichlorohydrin(1) from glycerine(2).
In December 2010, Solvay said it is studying the construction of an epichlorohydrin production plant in Taixing, China, with an initial capacity of 100,000 tons per year. The plant, which is expected to start producing in 2013, will be based on Solvay's innovative Epicerol® technology. The company has already reserved a construction site in Taixing Economic Development Park.
Although Solvay said the Epicerol products are aimed at China's fast-growing demand for epoxy resins, epichlorhydrin can be made into rubber, often abbreviated to ECO. Typical uses are in automotive fuel systems, bladders, diaphragms and rollers.
