Truck tyre deflation "like being hit by a truck"
ERJ staff report (DS)
London -- UK tyre retailer ATS Euromaster has developed a DVD-based training programme for tyre fitters and others in the tyre retail business.
The company has made some clips from the DVD available on the web. One such shows the sudden deflation of a truck tyres, following damage to the ply cords.
ATS says that when a tyre has been run either flat or under-inflated, some of the ply cords can be damaged. When the tyre is then inflated to full pressure, this can make the cords fail, and this over-loads adjacent cords, leading to catastrophic failure of the tyre and sudden release of air pressure. ATS says the force of the explosion is equivalent to being hit by a truck.
The video makes it clear that the failure of individual ply cords is audible, and wanrs tyre industry workers to listen out for the sound and treat it as a major wanring sign of imminent tyre failure.
