Cabot saw carbon black volumes fall in Q3
ERJ staff report (DS)
Boston, Massachusetts -- Third quarter fiscal 2011 EBIT in Cabot Corp.'s Rubber Blacks Business increased by $9 million when compared to the same quarter of fiscal 2010. The increase was driven principally by higher prices, a favorable product mix and energy center benefits.
The company said volumes in the quarter were 3 percent lower than a year ago, but most of this was due to the closure of aplant in India. On a like-for like basis, volumes declined 1 percent.
The company saw strong volume growth in Japan, with volumes up 8 percent over the year-ago figure and up by 15 percent on the previous quarter
Other markets were less healthy, with China, Southeast Asia and South America reporting volumes up on the previous quarter, but down on the year-ago figure. Europe, Mid-East and Africa saw the opposite trend, with volumes higher than Q3 last year, but lower than Q2 this year. Volumes in North AMerica were lower than a year ago and lower than last quarter.
