Net sales up by yen 9.4 billion at Japan's Ube

Tokyo, Japan - Sales at Ube Industries were yen 149.4 billion (euro 1353 million) in the first quarter of fiscal 2012 up from yen 139.9 the previous year.
The Japanese company, which produces chemicals, synthetic rubber and cement, had a net income of yen 5 billion, up yen 3.2 billion year-on-year.
In the chemicals and plastics segment, which includes synthetic rubber, net sales for the first quarter ended 30 June 2011 were yen 53.4 billion, up from yen 44.6 billion during the same period last year.
Operating income for the segment was yen 6 billion, up from yen 0.7 billion in the three months ended 30 June 2010.
The Japanese company said that polybutadiene rubber and polyamide resins were influenced by the 11 March earthquake in terms of raw material procurement and demand. However, Ube noted that sales were steady.
