China's retreading activity set to expand - report
ERJ staff report (DS)
Beijing - A long report on China Economic website quotes Zhu Jun, head of China Tyre Retreading, Repairing & Recycling Association saying the country is rapidly improving the status and performance of retreaded tyres. One of the key drivers for this is to conserve scare rubber resources.
Zhu was quoted in the report saying “"A realistic problem facing the current comprehensive utilisation of waste and old tyres in China is low utilisation ratio of waste and old tyres and low retreading ratio of old tyres." China produced more than 230 million waste tyres in 2009, in which only 13 million old tyres could be retreaded, accounting for 5 percent of the total numbers.
Zhu said tere is a shortage of good casings in the country, and this limits the number of retreads that can be produced. He said the carcasses are often damaged during their first life due to over-loading; over-speed and extended use. He said truck tyre users need to be educated that if they destroy the tyres through this kind of abuse that is more expensive in the long run
