ADAC reveals winter tyre test results
ERJ staff report (DS)
Munich, Germany - ADAC has released the results of its latest tests of winter tyres. The tests were carries out in conjunction with the Swiss and Austrian motoring clubs. The organisations tests three styles of tyre: 175/65 R14 T in both Winter and all-season styles and 195/65 R 15 T in Winter fitments.
In the size 195/65 R 15 T, ADAC tested 16 tyres. Six were recommended and these included tyres from Continental, Goodyear, Semperit, Dunlop and Michelin. The Trayal Arctica was regarded as unsatisfactory due to poor wet grip while a Falken EuroWinter tyre was only just sufficient due to poor snow braking performance.
The 175/65R14 Winter tyres saw 14 tyres tested. Of these, the Continental, Michelin and Dunlop products came out the best, while the Falken EuroWinter performed badly, notably on snow grip.
All-Season tyres performed poorly in comparison with the specialised Winter tyres. Out of six products tested, only the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons could be rated as satisfactory, while the others were rated as barely sufficient
The results carry extra weight this year, as Germany has legislation requiring drivers to fit appropriate tyres in Wintry conditions.
