Tyre shredding plant close to ERJ offices burns

Croydon - A tyre recycling plant close to the ERJ offices went up in flames yesterday. It caused traffic chaos as fire crews closed the main road due to risk of explosion of a series of gas canisters stored at the site.

The Neolay factory, located adjacent to the TGIFriday restaurant on the Purley Way in Croydon, south London, was damaged by the fire. The Fire Industry Association said, “Around 50 firefighters have been tackling the fire at the two-storey building on Purley Way since 1.15am on Thursday 22 Sept.. Fire safety crews have since closed the surrounding roads as there are fears containers on site could explode.”

At least half the building was affected and it was partially collapsed. Firefighters brought the blaze under control before the main body of scrapped tyres on the site could catch fire.
